A year in review

December is a very busy month for us.  With the holidays, the staffs got a chance to take some time off to enjoy the real world … we might be computer geeks but our computers are not our only friends, although it might seems that way most of the time. As stated in the last post, from now on, our english-speaking-only audience will have a new place to call home. Say hello to OnlinePhim.net’s little sister, OnlineDrama.net. Easy to remember isn’t it? Just to be sure, you should bookmark it now. The first step toward separation is now completed.

We are also celebrating our first aniversary this week. Yay. It had only been a year, but to many of us it seems so much longer. From the graph below, you can see that our site has been steadily growing. The majority of that growth is from the words of mouth because unlike other sites, we don’t spam to get noticed. Thanks for the PR , guys. Currently we are the top of Google for keywords such as … phim online, phim bo, phim viet nam, xem phim online …etc. Cool, eh?

Many things had happened since we started this little project. We grew so rapidly that it required us to move to a dedicated server. As we get more notices, we also attracted some unwanted guests. From people spamming the shoutbox, messing with the video ratings, stealing our donation gauge (yeah, go figure), to people who completedly ripoff our site layout. You’ve probably seen them around the net already. If copying is the sincerest form of flattery, those guys must really love us. If not, we might have to reconsider our open access policy.

We have spent lots of time researching and planning to get to this point. Although we are constantly working to improve the sites, truthfully speaking, I don’t think we’ll make it to the second aniversary. We are constantly underfunded, understaffed, and overworked … not to mention … constantly vandalized. Instead of working on beta2 of the site, I wasted most of my time looking after people who come poking around the site and check on dead links. I don’t know about you, but that is not fun, or productive. Before I continue on ranting, let’s take a quick look at the numbers, shall we? All numbers are current as of Dec. 27th, 2007.

Total titles: 1400+
Total videos: 40,000+
Total dead videos that needed to be updated: 2000+

Monthly page views: 16+ millions
Monthly unique visitors (IPs): 150,000+
Daily unique visitors (IPs): 6,000+
Percentage of returning visitors: 75%+

Total staffs: 3
Total active staffs: 2

Total volunteers who signed up: 12
Total active volunteers: 0

Take from that what you will. I’m not even going to list the number of times we run into a server problem that needed fixing. I lost count after I run out of fingers on my hands. Whatever happen to the site in the future, I do hope that you guys have a chance to see beta2 of the site, at least. We’ve spent many months doing research on it, and it would be a shame that only a few would get a chance to experience it. Anyway, I hope that everyone has fun this holiday season, be safe, and Happy New Year.

Edit (12/28/2007): Look like I was a little hasty in making the above statements, which had been crossed out. After discussing it with my staffs and our close friends, we agreed that there are too many potentials that we simply can’t ignore. We will try our best to keep the site going as long as it can. After all, wannabes can steal ideas, but not innovations. So, look for exciting new changes on the way. The staffs and I will get back to work after the new year.

if links are dead, just remove or note that. i for one would be willing to contribute if i didn’t spend hours trying to figure out if its my system or the link.
i realise that u put in a lot of time and i appreciate that, but its frustrating to the viewer too.

if the links are dead .. use the “report links” to notify us … that series, like everything else, will be updated when we get around to it. We don’t have the manpower to chase down every broken link and update/disable it in a timely manner. It’s unfortunate, but that’s how things are.

because the nature of online videos, broken links are very common, not to mention that we lost one of our dedicated servers a few month back which brought down tons of links. we have updated some, but with thousands of broken linkstakes lots of time. Not to mention we have to continually adding newly released ones.

this site, unlike most blogs/forums, is an experimental project (suggested by the ‘beta’ sign) … so it’s always under constant modifications … things WILL go wrong.

The only reason that I’ve encountered about the white screen is that you have Norton Internet Security or similar software installed. Check to see if it’s installed on your machine.
