Let’s play the analogy game
Ladies and gentlemen … welcome to the first show of the season. The goal of the game is to make comparisons between this site, our lovely site we have here against the competitions. Ok, so I’m not a game show host, but I still am going to pit our site against similar “competition” sites. Why? Because we can … and because I’m bored. So … game on!
Contents: As it had been said in the world of entertainment, content is king. It’s why youtube had become so popular. The contents between sites are pretty much “borrow” from each other. So even if you branded the video, doesn’t mean you are the original creator of the source. With that said, most sites try to collect as much as they can. Their thinking is that, if they have the most contents, people will come … and (hopefully) they will stay. In doing that, their sites will quickly become unorganized and people have to spend some time digging through all of the bloated contents to get to what they want. No doubt you had to go through pages and pages of music, videos, funnies and other random weirdness, when all you want is to watch some movie because you have some free time, and that is what you wanted to do. With OnlinePhim you will never have to deal with that. We will try to keep our contents as organized as possible. We WILL not post any video that doesn’t belong here, even if it’s the video is the funniest thing we ever seen. We might post it in the forum for you guys to enjoy when you decided to take a break, but we will never post it here. It simply don’t belong. Even though this will cut down on lots of contents, which might make us look like a smaller site, but in the end … we think you’ll appreciate it more. Also, to help you quickly locate the videos you want, we have implemented several functions that you’ll find useful. You do know we have a search function right? Also try out the directory listing. It’s a quick and easy way to find something you might like. And lastly, to help you keep track of the videos that you’ve watched so that you can come back to it later (useful on those long series), or just to act as a reminder … we also added a box with the necessary info right above the information box. You will need to have cookies enabled to use it. Yummm …. delicious cookiesssss.
Branding: Ah, branding. Nothing get people attention faster then a website address flashing in big red letters huh? Webmasters use branding as a way to market their site, and also a way to prevent “borrowing” of contents. That’s why many sites don’t like it when post something with branding on it in their sites/forums. They don’t like advertising for another site. So, even if you only have videos with branding, you can share it with your buddies because your stuffs are not “right” for the site. So what do I think about the all this? “Branding? What branding?” … Basically, I don’t care. If it’s something users wanted to view, a staff member will add it in. If our guests see the url and wanted to check out that site, s/he is free to do so. If they are better than us, then it’s only natural that you want to go there instead. But if not, then you’ll come back here.
Ads: Hosting cost money, so it’s understandable for webmasters to put up ads. The problem is when website force people to click on them before visitors are allowed to do anything else. Case in point, traudien.com. When you get to the site, you’ll be greeted with a message that said “click on the ads if you want to enter the forums”. Even if you click on the ads, you’re not done. You still required to register if you want to access the forums. Nothing like making your guests work for the peeking at your site huh? They probably appreciate it more. Either that or they become annoyed and leave. With OnlinePhim, you will never see such “force”. You won’t ever see any popup (or popunder, you know … the ad page the automatically show up and you won’t see it until you close the current one … and you are like … woah .. where did that come from) ads. Of one the sites that is littered with ads is tialia.net. For some reason unknown to us, whenever a staff member want to promote our site their, the post got deleted and the account gets banned. We did post in the room called “quang cao”. But for some reason, only our post get deleted while everybody elses’ stay the same. I guess they don’t like any site that’s better than them. Anyway .. back to the business at hand … On OnlinePhim, we promise that nothing will interfere with your enjoyment. You’re welcome to stay and enjoy the site as much as you want without clicking on a single ad. We will NEVER ask you to click on any ad at all. You are free to click on only the ads that interest you. Don’t click on the ads because you want to help us. Of course, donations are always welcomed.
If you really want to help, be part of the team. We’ll gladly have you as a member of the staffs. We value people more than money … well, until we run out of money .. then we’ll value it more than you …lol … seriously though … We do appreciate all the help we get.
Requirements: 10 posts required to view the contents. Reply to this topic to see the download link. No doubt you have seen these type of requirements before. What is worse? Spamming or leeching? That’s depends on who you’re asking. For a webmaster, leeching is inevitable. People come, and leave with your stuffs without a word of ‘thank you’. So, you put a little restriction on it. Then, users will only post enough to view tho contents and never post again. What worse is that user what contents right away, so s/he will start spamming to get enough post count. Some website let people spam because this increased their post count. It makes them more attractive to advertisers. So what about us? Well, the only restriction we have is at LotusZero because of it’s forums (we like to keep it manageable if we can). As for OnlinePhim, there is no restriction whatsover. You never have to post a thing. You never have to pay a dime. Don’t have to register (with your fake email addresses). You don’t even have to say hi to other members (though it is frowned upon). I’ll personally whack you with my whooping stick if you lurk around here for weeks without saying hello to anybody.
Presentations:There are not that many sites that have clean user interface. Most users will be fine with that since it’s the contents that they are after so they don’t care what it looks like. But a website with a nice design is more inviting and much more attractive. One of the ones that I saw that have a nice interface is noiket.com. You probably have heard of it. I was a month into this project before I realize that there is already a script for it. Actually, there are tons of youtube clone scripts floating around the internet which had passed my way, but I never actually look at any of them. I saw the demos, but they never have the functionalities I wanted. If I’m not mistaken, noiket is using one of those scripts, with some modifications obviously. The site is slowly becoming unorganized because of the many different contents that they crammed into it. Now if they only remove that big youtube logo on the front page, they’ll look much nicer. As for OnlinePhim, I know it’s not as clean as it used to, mainly because of all the functionalities I tried to crammed into it. The flow is a bit more logical (at least as I see it). If you don’t see it, you need thicker glasses than the ones you have now … lol.
Functionalities: The problem with most of the sites out there is that they either forum-based … or script-based. What that means is that they are built from a mold. Everybody will look like everybody else (just with different layout). Since the coding is mostly done by more expert programmers, most webmasters will spend a huge amount of time doing research before they can add some small functionality (that wasn’t built in) to the site . So, most of the time, if you want request a new function to be added to the site, chances are … unless someone else already made an addon for that script, you won’t ever see that feature. OnlinePhim is built from the ground up, with the features that I wanted along with some requested features from other staff members. The end result is what you’re seeing today. And if there is a features that lots of members want to see added, I can make that happen … not because I’m good … but because I know my codes. Although I don’t think I’m that bad either … lol
Competitions: Up until now, only luyenphim.com had actually complained about content usage (I’m expecting more soon). They are saying that we are stealing their contents. Because they take the time to brand their videos, how dare us to come along and market their sites without asking them first. Well … dude, we did not come to your site. Whatever we have, we gathered it from public servers … youtube, google videos, dailymotion …etc. If you do a search online, I bet that more than half of the sites on the page 1 are using “your contents”. I do applause you for taking the time to upload them, but even then, you do not own the original source. You probably got them from somewhere else like the rest of us. Besides, we are giving you free publicity by using videos with your url in them … we should get paid for helping you marketing your site. If we brand our videos, will you do the same and add them to your website? We will gladly give you the links to them when they are uploaded. Sharing is our motto … heck .. it’s even part of our slogan.
So … what is the moral of all this? Hmmm …. let me think … I wrote it down somewhere … dammit … where’s is that napkin? … Shooot I used it to clean the spilled drink earlier …. it’s a little smudged .. but it still good … it still good …. ok .. so the moral of the story is … we’re a small site (and we know it) with big ideas … and if you share our visions .. then we could use the support …. hmmmm … wait .. there’s a bit more on here ….. oh yes … but most importantly … enjoy your stay and remember our motto … watch … discuss … share …
Good night everybody ….. shhhh … hey it’s your cue to lower the curtain … wake up … wake up …. nevermind … I can do it myself … you can go back to sleep ….. uh …. Good night!

Thank for your comment on noiket.com, we’re working hard as I speak to reorganize our contents because of the massive amount of movies that we have now. I like your straight forward opinion on how we are getting crowded.
Our website is not based on a youtube clone scripts, and the youtube symbol on the frontpage is just a random music video we pull from our database of external music video scripts.
Our scripts is mostly build from ground up, so flexibility is not an issue, we’re about to launch 2 new features this week (TV Online, and Blogs) that integrated directly with our current system, no third party stuffs.

One more thing, after surfing through onlinephim.net.
As the creator of noiket.com, I’m really impressed.
I like your presentation and clean design with AJAX technology.
I believe that this website will do pretty well, keep up the good work.
Just one ideas, you might need to think about category because when more contents is added, it will be hard to find movies, but other than that I think your site rock man!

My apology about using a clone script. The interface looks like some of the ones I’ve seem so I thought it might be one.
Kudos on trying to build the site from the ground up. I know how time consuming it is. TV online is also on my list of future projects. It’s only logical right? You seem to have a few bugs still needed to work out though. Can’t wait to see the final version. As for the blogs, they look very promising. Are you pulling the info automatically or manually type in?
As for locating the videos, I still haven’t decided on how to implement it yet. Categorize them isn’t quite that easy because of how many genre a video can have. I was thinking of implementing a complete tagging system for them, but that would require modifications to the db and more coding, and that I don’t have time for at the moment. But in the mean time, you can still using the directory listing and the search function to locate the video you want.
Your site has quite a bit of features that I wanted to implement myself, if I ever find the time. I know you want to add more features, but try to keep the interface clean as much as possible. Your layout is very good, but it can be easily ruin by all the things you stuff into it. Anyway, thanks for visiting and for the compliments.
UPDATE: 2/27/2007: It look like noiket is actually using “dzoic handshakes” scripts with some mods and not actually built from the ground up. Shame, shame on you for lying.

Thank for the advice on keeping the interface clean. You’re right this is crucial to our success. So tell me, you design this site all by yourself
Months?
The tagging system, I think is a great idea, like a tag clouds that some of the website has. I might have to look into that in the future though, hopefully not too much recoding
Apart from Noiket.com, have you run into any other site worth noticing lately.
I come across a site called phimtogo.com which do movie sharing like us. From further research, I find out that they are from the same creator as that of caveviet.com one of top 100 Vietnamese webiste (adult only though)
There’s another interesting site you might want to check out is 4phim.com which has pretty nice layout too.
Well, I wish you the best luck and hope to see you on the chart of Vietnamese best website one day.
February 10th, 2007 at 9:46 pm
pretty much … i built it bit by bit … there some more functions i wanted to add, but afraid the layout will be clutter … so i’m putting them off for awhile …
…i’ve been working on it in my spare time since oct.
i think it depends … but look like your site already have too many functions … unless you use modular design, i think it does require quite a bit of work
yup .. both of those sites use the same design … what site lists the top 100 viet sites? how are they ranked? i haven’t seen any reliable ranking system yet … so i don’t know accurate they are …
as for 4phim, i think i saw that layout somewhere else before …just can’t recall where … also, it seems that they have quite a few bugs not fixed yet … for instead … embedded player doesn’t work right with ff … while some movies directly link to google, youtube ..etc … other than the frontpage .. i don’t see anything special … even the ad banners look kinda childish …
thanks .. and same to you …
on another note … are you having any problem using adsense on pages with american movies? i thought they would ban you for that … :/ … have you find any ad network that is worthwhile? you seem to be using lots of them at once …
February 12th, 2007 at 2:13 pm
I used iframe to load up the adsense, on american movies we still get the same ad as any other movies because of the keyword I put inside the code. If you look at our header and our footer you will see that the Vietnamese keyword dominate so it trick google to place Vietnamese adsense on those content pages.
Another network that might be interesting, we’re currently testing it right now is adbrite.com.
, and also they are not as strict as google. However their click through rate will not be as good as google since their inventory do not have that many Vietnamese related link.
They tend to generate ad that are not too specific to Vietnamese, which we need
I’m trying to search for CPM (cost per impression) campaign right now since our site have consistent increasing of traffic. I ran across a network called Clicksor that allow CPM, just sign up so I’m about to test it out. I’ll let you know how it turn out.
Google adsense still offer the best money right now for us and I believe it will continue to be like this in the future. They do have more regulation, we have to take out some of their ad placement out so we wouldn’t be against their regulation. In those places we’ll will place adbrite.com link there to generate extra revenue, and maybe try to place one or two CPM banner to see how that turn out.
I believe that once we launch the blog, the adsense will work better since it will have more content to pull ad from and those ad will cost more.
Vietnamese ads profit/click: $.05 – $.10
Other ads: $.15 – $.50
See what I mean
.
February 15th, 2007 at 11:35 am
I’ve tried clicksor before … and I can tell you .. it not worth it … the pay rate is so low that I think you make more money standing at the corner and ask people for changes … lol … the only thing I like about it is that they pay quickly … and on time …I just log in again and look like that the minimum payout had been raised from $20 to $50 … for clicksor time .. that like 2 months ….ayyyy …
i don’t think adbrite is that much better though … let me know how it goes …
yeah … I do think the blog will work better because of more word density … so the rotation of words and the related ads will be much better too … but if you use primary just vietnamese on the blogs … it still won’t be that much better since at the moment google engine can’t correctly work with vietnamese yet … they probably show stuffs in chinese or something though …
google has too many retrictions … i can’t really try anything too crazy because they might ban my account … i want to give yahoo a try though .. but keep getting rejected because the site is not big enough yet …
