Growing pains …
I just took a look at the system log and it’s look like the traffic is growing steadily. From Tuesday to Saturday of last week, the average page view count is roughly about 400,000 per day, with 1000 visits (400 views/visit). I didn’t know the server is handling this many requests, since our online counter only register users who is viewing page, and staying on the page for longer than 15 seconds. Why is there a difference? Well, the online counter is a more realistic user experience and the system log is an actual performance stat. It’s also why our realtime counter got into the “cgi limit reached, please try again later” error. So for now, the realtime counter is removed and we are back at using the regular counter.
Even though I’ve been sick for most of last week, somehow, I managed to get alot of things done. The directory listing is done. Initially I wanted to use dhtml for it, but it turns out that there was some conflict with all the javascripts that the site has. I mean it would still work, it just that IE gave the little yellow warning icon in the lower left corner, which is annoying to me. So I threw that out and decided to go with the straight form selections. The latest 10 videos and the top 10 video pages are also updated with clickable links. Which mean now you are able to go to the actual video instead of just looking at the info. Yup, they are more useful now.
One of things that I’ve seen recently is that people have started to post their email addresses on the shoutbox. I’m assuming that they want to sign up for the newsletter (which is not ready yet) and mistakenly input the info there. I guess not many people appreciate my weird sense of humor for the “h?p la”.
It look like that one of the next things for me to do is the newsletter feature, otherwise people will keep on spaming the shoutbox with their email (which is not safe, by the way).
On the final note, it looks like that not many people have sign up to help us with this project. Shame, shame on you. In order to keep the site going, and most importantly … free. We need your help. I have a full time job, and other staff members have limited amount of time they can spare each day. This will be my last attempt to recruit new members, from now on … I’ll leave the chips fall where they may …
Once again, remember our motto … and enjoy your stay.
